Mushroom Lights

In Collaboration with Makerbot

In 2012, Alvaro Uribe Design collaborated with 3D-printing experts Makerbot to create the innovative Mushroom Lamps. According to the designers, “The Mushroom lamps explore new forms and details that can only be achieved through fuse deposition technology. We have been using 3D printing to quickly check and validate our designs as part of the design process that we go through with our clients. We noticed that in the process of printing, the machine would create a honeycomb structure to reduce the use of material. However, this honeycomb pattern is then buried under the outer layers of the design. Hence, the design aims to celebrate the actual process of 3D printing as an opportunity to create more organic and surprising designs by bringing the pattern out through the use of light; an effect that would never be possible through traditional manufacturing methods.”
